A Rainy Summer Couple Photoshoot at the Duomo di Milano

Some cities are made for love stories, and Milan is one of them. For Teryn and Diego’s lovestory session, we met in Piazza del Duomo in September 2026. They wore all white, the city’s most iconic cathedral stood behind them, and the weather had plans of its own.

Why the Duomo di Milano is perfect for a couple photoshoot

The Duomo is one of the most photogenic places in Italy. Its white and pink Candoglia marble glows softly even on a cloudy day, and every corner has a different backdrop. The full facade gives a sense of scale. The carved portals and monumental bronze doors make an intimate frame for a couple. The small sculpted details work beautifully in black and white.

We started with wide shots across the piazza to show the whole cathedral, then moved closer to the doors for quieter, more connected portraits and then we went up to the Museo del Novecento. Its tall arched windows look directly onto the cathedral and the piazza below, and Lucio Fontana’s neon sculpture glows above. It’s a calm, elegant space and a great alternative when the weather turns. You get soft window light, clean lines and a view of the Duomo that most visitors never see.

When the rain arrived

Halfway through the session, the summer rain began. Instead of running for cover, Diego took off his jacket and held it over them both. Some of my favourite images from the day came from those few minutes: laughter, running across the empty square, and the cathedral shining wet behind them. Rain also clears the crowds, so we had Piazza del Duomo almost to ourselves.

My tip: don’t cancel your session for light rain. Some of the most genuine, playful moments happen when plans change.

Planning your own Milan photoshoot

Best time: early morning for an empty piazza
What to wear: light, neutral or all-white outfits stand out against the marble without competing with it.
Locations nearby: Piazza del Duomo, the cathedral’s bronze doors, Palazzo Reale, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Museo del Novecento are all within a few minutes’ walk.
Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours covers both the outdoor and indoor spots comfortably.
